Official Review: Lantern in the Mist

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Lantern in the Mist" by Liliana Shelbrook.]

Recently I got a chance to read Lantern in the Mist by Liliana Shelbrook. It’s a journey of 2 sisters, Kathlene and Josie, with a man who became that Lantern who saw them through the mist.

When I picked this book, my first thought was that I might not complete it. Firstly, because I'm always a little apprehensive when I pick a book of an author whose work is new to me. Secondly, I don’t have a taste for historical fiction.

As soon as I started reading it I felt as if I'm travelling with Kathlene and Josie. Suddenly, the gone period didn’t appear to be as distant as I always feel. I could visualize what I was reading because author's writing style was lively and refreshing. I wasn’t dragging myself from one page to another. I wanted to absorb every tiny winy detail because after a long time I was reading a differently told story. I couldn't keep it down and hence ended up reading it entire night.

I have read many stories where the damsel in distress picks the gun and shoots all the evil without taking help of the knight in shining armour. But this story was different because the damsel was fighting and facing what she was due to face while the knight was showing her light but was not making her helpless, at the same time, he was doing his own Karma too. They were connected yet independent.

What I most liked about this story is, each character was living upto their role, be it Kathlene, Josie, Sam, Martha, Kane, Kit, Saopy, Mary, Mrs. Davenport, Laurette, Cherie, or even Mayor Davenport, Jake, and Dolly. Each character had a significant exit from the journey and was given full justice. Any transformation that occurred in any character was fully justified and was not transformed out of the blue.

What I didn’t like is I wish this story had a more significant end. Like it started I wish it would have ended with equal connectivity. It just ended like that and was clear in itself that author was in a hurry for Lantern in the Mist II. If this was supposed to be the end then the story ended many pages before because it felt like I was climbing a mountain with the characters of the story but author stopped us just when we were reaching the peak/destination after overcoming all the hurdles.

Other than the end I don’t have any complain with this story and I would easily give it 3.5 stars. If the system allows, I would like to keep 1/2 star with me because this story started with a great promise but ended abruptly. I guess nothing can be perfect! But, none the less, I can still call it a complete journey. And, I’m looking forward to reading the next part. So, since half stars are not allowed for official ratings, I will round up and rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

Yes. It’s a must read. Kathleen loves her sister unconditionally. Author has depicted their bond by avoiding any god-like qualities in kathlene which makes it quite believable. It’s just love, pure love, from both sides. And, you will fall in love with the hero. He is no God and you’ll respect and adore him for this. It is the kind of story that tugs at your heart.

Overall, it’s a memorable, entertaining, and gripping story minus the “dragging” end which is like a scar on a beautiful face.
