This is Desirae Williams's first novel. It is about the ups and downs of a somewhat dysfunctional family from Lake City, Florida, now living in New York.

The Story

Lucy is a spoiled girl with a rich daddy who always gave her everything. One day, her father forces her to get a job, in order to know the meaning of a dollar. Coming home from work, her car breaks down, and a very good looking man, Grant, helps her. There is an instant connection, a chemistry between them that drew them together.

Their story was a classic: she was a rich, spoiled girl, who fell in love with a poor, good looking guy from the wrong side of town. Not exactly one to bring home to Dad. He was part of a dysfunctional family, that neglected him thanks to drugs. He had some brushes with the law, and a criminal record from his reckless teen years. No matter the cultural and social differences, Grant and Lucy were positive they had to be together.

Skip a few years, and they are married in New York. Lucy's career becomes her first and foremost concern, bumping her family from the spotlight. Her marriage suffers from her neglect, and Grant looks for attention through other means. After the truth comes out, no one is sure if their marriage will be saved, or if it is even worth trying to save.

My Reaction and Rating

When I started reading this book, I found it intriguing, because it narrated only through the minds of the characters. It was as if you were getting a glimpse of their minds. That was a good thing, because it left nothing unanswered. And, even though you knew everything that was going on, you still wanted to keep going and find out what happens on the next chapter.

The characters were believable. They didn’t live in a fantasy world, spoke like a normal person would on their situations, and their actions and reactions didn’t seem farfetched.

The plot was good. It deals with common problems in marriages, and as a married person myself, it appealed to me. Everything that happened was something that could happen to anyone, and its bluntness makes it better to read and comprehend easily.

I give this story 3 out of 4 stars. My reason is, because it was a really smooth story to follow, with relatable characters and real-life situations. I was suffering through all their wrong decisions, and celebrating their successes. It was a brilliant first novel.

I did not give it 4 stars, because it needs proofreading. All throughout the novel, there are grammatical errors that distracted me a little from the whole experience.

Other than that, I really recommend it to everyone, especially to married couples.
