Review of Tomboy GIGI and the fugitive
Tomboy GIGI and the Fugitive by Darryl Barnes is a story told by Gigi to her grandson Michael. Michael was being bullied at school, so Gigi told him the story of the fiercest boxer she ever met to build his courage. She told him the story of Bo Henry Washington. Bo was the only brother to his two sisters and was the youngest. He had a temper from a young age. He worked as the corner boy for Mr. Andrew Johnson, who was the best boxer in the town then, before taking over to be an even fiercer boxer who never lost a fight. He lived his best life and was the town’s favourite until his relationship with his girlfriend became a problem for him. What problem did his relationship with his girlfriend cause him? Check out this book to find out.
True friendships are not planned most of the time, and this was the case between Gigi and Bo. Their lives were different, and they came from different backgrounds. Bo was a black young man who was thriving in a society where blacks were oppressed, while Gigi was a white young girl who was suffering from the maltreatment of her mother’s boyfriend and a lack of attention from her mother. In what seems like a coincidence, they cross paths and build a strong relationship. Even though it ended earlier than usual, the impact was felt for years. It was really admirable.
Through this book, some common societal issues were raised, like interracial relationships and racism. It was sad to see how much hate the sheriff had for Bo because he was a black man. Bo’s story is one of resilience and determination.
There was nothing to dislike about this fantastic novel. The storytelling is of top-notch quality. It was attention-grabbing and beautiful overall. The editing was professionally done with very minor errors.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it was an interesting and engaging read. I recommend it to anyone who loves to read books about true friendship.
