The Ranger's Apprentice series: Should I read it?

I've heard mixed reviews of the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan. Some of my friends really loved it. Others thought that it appeals more to a teenage crowd and was just "ok". What do you guys think? Should I start the series?
