Official Review: Limitation: Book I of the Demiseer Saga

I have just finished reading Limitation: Book I of the Demiseer Saga by R M Musgrove. I would classify it as a teen paranormal romance/drama told from the view point of our main character Madeleine, who is just starting a new high school.
The book opens by telling us that Maddie is no ordinary teenager and she has an amazing and burdensome gift, one that she sees as no gift at all. Any family, friends, and lately someone new she just met if they are being their “true” self, our Maddie can dream at night of their deaths. She awakens horrified, knowing the way a person dies and a relative ball park of how old they are based on how old they look in the dream. She keeps a dream journal and tries to hide her ability from her parents who have just put her in new school where Maddie can start over, and here she vows not to get close to anyone so she can hopefully avoid any dreams of their demise. Things don’t go as planned as on her first day, she bumps into an outcast sort of a girl who calls herself “Sable” and because she isn't putting up fronts and being who she really is, that night Maddie dreams of her death. The most disturbing part is that Sable looks the same age as she is now, wearing the same shoes in her dream.
As Maddie continues at the new school trying to decide what to do with her knowledge of Sables impending death, she makes new friends and even a love interest. She is also introduced to a teachers assistant a only a few years her senior that finally gives a name to what she is, a demiseer. He tries to guide her into being a spectator to observe how these dreams play out and to never try to directly interfere with fate. Maddie struggles with this idea and ends up doing things her way.
I found this to be a very well written book and enjoyed the way the author describes the main characters’ internal conflict with her ability as she tries to ignore, prevent, and then use it to help her friends. Let’s also not forget to mention the other aspects that make a good story, teen drama with a bit of friendly jealousy and some romance.
I cant really say anything negative about this book, as it was difficult to put down once I started reading it. The only aspect that could hurt it is that it follows in the wake of other teen paranormal romances like Twilight, the House of Night series, and a few other series based along the same lines especially concerning a teenage girl with a special gift overcoming high school and accepting herself.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars as it is very well written and the story line flows seamlessly that keeps the reader interested. The ending definitely leads the reader to believe there will be more, and I for one can’t wait for the second installment.
