Review of Blessed is the Man
Blessed is the Man by Donald Darnell Harper is an intriguing and inspiring book that tells the story of the author's parents' influence on the formation of his character and beliefs. But is this a typical book? I mean, most parents have an impact on the formation of their children. Wrong. The author's father was an African-American entrepreneur and Christian who could buy a farm and prosper based on his work ethic and Christian values. He passed this on not only to the author but also to his 11 other children. If this sounds ordinary to you, dear reader, imagine doing so in the 1930s and 1940s in the segregated South during the Jim Crow era.
What I liked most about this book was learning about the details of the author's father's life. The story of how an African American succeeded and prospered in such a hostile environment touched my heart. Lloyd Harper embodies, like no other, the essence of what it means to be an American, or at least what the founding fathers saw as what an American should be. His humility, hard work, and devotion to family had a profound impact not only on his family but on many people close to him.
There is nothing negative to mention here. Everything is structured intelligently, and the author explains practical examples from his parents' lives that influenced his future development. The book is a testament to the author's attention to detail, as it does not contain a single grammatical error, and its editing is flawless.
Overall, Blessed is the Man is captivating, profound and touching. Few books can simultaneously touch the reader and teach such valuable lessons as this. Since I couldn't find anything negative to mention, the book deserves 5 out of 5 stars. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't be able to benefit from the lessons presented in this book. The author describes in detail the influence his parents had on his life and that of his siblings and the people around him. Even in a hostile environment where he suffered prejudice from a large part of the population, the author's father proved to be calm, hard-working, and honest, passing on Christian teachings to his entire family.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy stories of overcoming obstacles, entrepreneurship, and American history. It's worth noting that it does not contain profane words or sexual content, making it suitable for readers of all ages.
