Harry Potter vs. The Mortal Instruments

I know a lot of people talk about how similar "Harry Potter" and "The Mortal Instruments" are, and seeing as I've read only the first book of "The Mortal Instruments" I cannot say much about it but there are some things I'm see that could possibly be similar? Not sure, but I've heard a lot of "This was just a fanfiction she wrote about Harry Potter!" And I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on this?
