Review of Tilka Faces the Odds, One Man at a Time
“Tilka Faces the Odds, One Man at a Time” by L.A. Meredith is a cute modern-day romance novel. Tilka is a single forty-year-old woman living in Alaska year round. She shares a condo that looks like it’s straight out of the 70s with her two teen daughters, Natalie and Rosey, who both want her to find the right man. She finds the courage to follow their prodding and fill out a profile on match.com. Tilka navigates the dating pool in Alaska, going through her fair share of highs and lows to find love. Along the way, she finds spiritual peace.
This book is a great fit for readers looking for an escape into a romantic story that is uplifting and heartfelt. I give it a rating of four out of five stars. One of the reasons for such a rating is because Tilka is written with depth and complexity. An introvert, she contemplates herself and her choices regarding men in a realistic way, asking a lot of questions to deal with her issues. The dynamic between Tilka and Rupert, the therapist she has been seeing for years, feels real as well. Whenever she vents to him about a date, it’s not hard to imagine that an actual therapist would respond the same way. Another reason why I rate the novel so highly is because Tilka’s attempts to find love will be relatable to many readers. Online dating has its pros and cons, and Tilka’s quest for love mirrors that fact in an entertaining way. The emotional roller coaster of her life as she becomes involved with the characters John and Max in particular is enough to be hooked.
The reason why I give “Tilka Faces the Odds, One Man at a Time” four stars has to do with the ending. For everything that Tilka goes through, the ending is lackluster. Interactions with one or more of the characters from closer to the beginning of the novel would give more of a sense of closure.
