Review of My Dream Lover The Uncut Version
If you enjoy lengthy foreplay in your romance novels, My Dream Lover: The Uncut Version is for you. It takes years of seduction for the protagonist, Robert Bryant, to succumb to the wiles of his one and only. David Navarria's detailed narrative technique masterfully builds the suspense. Adding this element to the almost flawless editing earns a five-out-of-five-star rating.
Other positives to this novel include the clever foreshadowing, such as the mysterious cloud that descends over the football field, which gives off The Time Traveler's Wife vibes. Navarria never lets the reader forget the ethereal undertones with his subtle reminders throughout the story.
On the surface, this is a coming-of-age story of a boy with an extremely high IQ and uncanny abilities to analyze situations. Robert, the protagonist, grows up and learns to understand his gifts. His parents have raised him to be thoughtful, compassionate, and generous, and his perfect life is full of positive milestones. As I read, I kept wondering how long this ideal life would last.
Halfway through the book, I found out. It is difficult to describe without spoilers, but the cleverness of the author shines through. My anticipation while reading the recreated chapters was high because I kept wondering how things would be changed. I was not disappointed.
The only negative I found was an inconsistent use of the dinkus between scenes. Sometimes a series of dots was used to indicate a time-lapse; at other times, it was missing. I had to reread the previous paragraph to make sure I hadn't missed something. The most jarring one was right before the consummation of a relationship.
Mature readers who like some mild erotica with their sci-fi fantasy will enjoy My Dream Lover: The Uncut Version. It has some quirky characters (both human and otherworldly), mystery, and humor. I grew up in a small town in Ohio in the 1950s, so the setting of this book might have added to my enjoyment.
