I had never read about a Christian mystery series, but I think this is a very interesting and unique plot. I've read other books by Dorothy May Mercer, so I am certain this book will be as incredible as the others. The book follows the 100-year-old River Heights Church, a place with a very intriguing past.

A Christian mystery and suspense book? That seems like a whole package.
From this review, the hunted church might have had a nasty history. I liked the reviewer's mention of how the author tried to make Alan a better leader.
I'll definitely get this book!

Pastor B and the haunted church sounds like a very interesting book. I am looking forward to read about all the problems they faced along with all the very interesting characters. It is after all so typical of a church congregation with all its members who are just normal people. Pastor B’s wisdom to submit under God’s guidance to resolve these obstacles is an example to us of how to and who to go to when we encounter the ups and downs of life’s problems.

I love how the story blends faith, history, and mystery. The connection to the Underground Railroad adds real depth, and it’s refreshing to see a pastor character grounded in both spiritual wisdom and practical leadership.

"Pastor B and the Haunted Church" by Dorothy May Mercer is a Christian Mystery Suspense and the first book in the Christian series about the River Heights Church. This church is a 100-year-old mansion with a spooky history going back to the 19th century. Alan Burke was recently assigned to this old church after being pastor of a large congregation in the suburbs. His boss, Bishop Remarque, thought it would be good for Alan since he was approaching retirement and this old church would not require him to work 72-hour weeks like he had done for several years. The congregation is mostly older people with a few young people, some with young children. Pastor Burke decided that he would do what he could to increase the congregation of The River Heights Church, He visits members of the church at their homes and businesses to get to know them and he suggests to the parents with young children that he planned to open a nursery in the church building so that the parents could attend services without having to keep an eye on the little ones. The nursery would also provide babysitting services in the evening so parents with young children could spend time together and strengthen their marriage. He may be retiring after this church assignment but he wants to grow The River Heights Church before he retires. He also plans to be very involved in church renovations since the church is more than 100 years old, dating back to the 19th century, and it really needs repairs. The River Heights Church was built on the site of a church that had been burned down when it was a stop on the Underground Railroad. A non-member of the church established the George Mountbatten Reed Memorial Fund and opportunities arise to renovate the church instead of building a new church in a better part of the city. The church needs renovations and Alan wondered about what contractors may find on this historical site. Alan would also like to know who established the fund and why? Alan has a lot to learn about this church that includes deceit, greed, embezzlement, gambling, jealousy, the Underground Railroad and a suicide attempt all play important parts in this story. What are the spooky stories the older members enjoy talking about? The sample was a good introduction to the story but the best parts that include the crimes, gambling, greed and a suicide attempt will be covered in the remainder of the book.

Wow. Church history, deceit, embezzlement, suicide attempt, gender conflict... This is definitely a rich book. I especially like the spooky part and learning about leadership. A book to read!

I am impressed by Dorothy's skillful infusion of elements of mystery and suspense into the narrative, and I really appreciate that she was able to fit several themes into this story without losing her grip on any. I am interested in reading more about the character Alan. And, thanks to the author for giving her work professional editing.
