Fancy Pants By Cathy Marie Hake

Post by therhinofam »

After the loss of her parents, Lady Sydney Hathwell, finds herself penniless, promised to a man who seems only interested in her for business dealings, and an ocean away from her home in England. She is desperate to run and hide and in her desperation, she contacts a long lost Uncle in Texas. Unfortunately, her uncle mistakes her for a "nephew." Worried that if her uncle finds out she is female that he will not accept her, Sydney decides to play the part of the young nephew from England.

Upon arriving on the ranch in Texas, Sydney is greeted by the foreman Big Time who is less than impressed by the young man he sees. Tim takes extra care to try to work Sydney into a hard working man by the time the uncle returns. Through a series of unfortunate circumstances, Tim discovers that Sydney is really a woman. Furious over the deception, Tim places great distance between himself and Sydney.

The end of the story felt quite rushed and anti-climactic. This book fell into the "inspirational literature" genre, but after reading it, the "inspirational" aspect felt like more of an after thought to the whole story. While I don't mind and even enjoy reading books from this particular genre, the story could have been written without the sparce scenes of conversion. The story concept did seem strong enough to stand on it's own, but the ending could have used a bit more details and time.
“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.”
― Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre
