Shayla’s Catch, by Sonya Jenkins, is a treat for lovers of romance. It was a fairly long, but easy, read of about 470 pages and was extremely insightful. This book is centralized around the theme of love and respect and the idea of balance. After reading Shayla’s Catch, it made me realize how love and respect are like the yin and yang of an intimate relationship: it is not healthy to have one without the other.

The story follows the life of a single, twenty-five year old woman named Shayla Lucas, and her quest to find Mr. Right and true love. When she meets the very handsome and extremely popular NFL player named Calvin Kendall Moore, Shayla thinks that he is the one. The only problem is that Calvin is an arrogant womanizer. In the novel the Calvin brags, “The more you see me, the more you’ll want me.” Calvin’s words are no exaggeration. After repeatedly being mentally abused and betrayed by Calvin, Shayla is still wrapped around his web and can’t build up the nerve to end things between them for good.

There is this famous Persian saying that says, “If your brain does not think straight, then your whole body is in danger.” That saying reminded me of Shayla’s dilemma. The more she follows her heart, the more she gets hurt. Will Shayla be able to follow her brain leave Calvin? Or will she follow her heart, push through the pain, and try to change him?

I liked how relatable this book was. When Shayla was at a football game she read Calvin’s bio over and over again, and I remember doing the same thing at my high school football games. Even though I did not agree with most of the choices Shayla was making, I could still understand why she would think that way and do what she did. Also, I felt as if I were friends with all of the characters. Although this book was quite long, it never got boring because of the sudden plot twists. It was like a roller coaster full of ups and downs. Additionally, I liked the message that this novel gave saying that, “You only accept the love that you think you deserve.” Shayla’s character is very dynamic and I’m sure that readers can tell that she really takes that message to heart, later in the story. She was a truly inspirational character.

On the other hand, this book had many grammatical and spelling errors, making me have to stop and reread sentences over again. When I was reading the book, Calvin’s character got on my nerves quite a bit. I have never met such a rude character in my life. The way he treated Shayla just appalled me. That made me want to side with Shayla more and cheer her on throughout the story. Therefore, I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to romance lovers or anyone above eighteen (due to some graphic scenes and profanity) looking for a good read.
