Official Review: The Lighthouse by Tina Hansen

I’m kind of conflicted on this book...there were some great premises that could’ve developed into interesting plot lines, but it just wasn’t there. It seemed shallow, boring, and the story just didn’t make sense.
In the first ten pages we find out that our main character Jane inherits a lighthouse from her Uncle Delby, who she has never met. Right in the beginning of the book Jane decides to leave her job in Wisconsin and move into this lighthouse on an island on Lake Michigan. Her sister doesn’t seem to contest anything and lawyer handling the will just says that Jane got the lighthouse because her uncle adored her mother. It was all kind of strange and started raising some questions.
The Lighthouse kind of alludes to Jane being a widow and losing some family members, but there was never a backstory behind it and nothing was ever confirmed; it was vague and I just guessed that Kyle was her late husband and I’m still not sure who Nancy is. I think that part simply existed as another reason for Jane to get away and move into the lighthouse.
I found myself confused as to how Jane ended up from one scene to another- one minute she was selling her cottage and the next minute she was getting horses and buying boats for the little island she lived on. Every time there was some mystery or something was about to happen, it totally switched gears and was never visited again. Also, I found that personally I didn’t like Jane because of her ego- every man she encountered hit on her and seemed to just fall all over her. A man she was involved with in high school suddenly showed up and became a big part of her life again. Jane wanted to break up with him one minute but then invited him over and slept with him and eventually just kind of settling with him in the end. Plus, all of the revelations and story happened in the end, so I don’t know how many readers would even get that far.
I feel like this story is on the right track, but it needs to be worked a little more. I noticed that sometimes sentences were highlighted in different colors, “lighthouse” was spelled as one word or two (ex. “light house”), and the dialogue was short and didn’t have proper punctuation. I was also surprised to see a “418” phone number listed and not a fake “555” phone number- who’s number is that?
Half of me thinks that The Lighthouse is a soap opera that you would either love or hate, but I also wonder if this is maybe draft 2 that could be a lot better with a more thought-out plot. I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars.
