I think the word 'chore' sums it up best for me. I love reading and can usually get through pretty much anything with minimal effort but I find Dickens a chore.

I wish I found his characters superb but I just don't. I find them trite. Oh well. Once I finish Bleak House I'll make sure I wait at least another decade before I try him again.

Ah well ... what a boring world it would be if we all shared the same likes & dislikes. Enjoy your reading

I love the story. It has nothing to do with the way he writes. I feel his stories are relate-able and give a wonderful perspective of both sides of the conflict.

Mairin- Good choice on Bleak House, that's a great book. A little slow going in, but all in all worth it in my opinion.

My favorite Dicken's is Little Dorrit. His writing's not the greatest, but he doesnt really sugar coat anything, he just lays it on the table... i dont know i love me Charles Dickens. He's unique and what am i if not a lover of uniqueness?

Ok, so all the people hating on Dickens, I have several reasons why I love him - choose to ignore if you wish, but please consider them. I wouldnt type them out if i didnt think them worthwhile.

1) Characters: Dickens has created some of the most memorable and vivid characters in literature, such as Scrooge, Quilp, Havisham etc.
They are so well presented, so well visualised, and so unique, that they tower above others like.... Julia in 1984.... eurgh.

2) Storylines: They are just monstrously good. They all contain a number of twists, turns, and secondary plot lines which always merge seamlessly at the end.

3) Style : Does no-one else think it's like he is talking to you?! It's such a lovely style. Ling winded - I accept. Overly long in places. But he writes for the enjoyment, not purely the 'need' of JUST facts. "Reason not the NEED." - King Lear.

Read some Dickens comedy such as "The Pickwick Papers", or some of "great expectations." Have your heart turned upside down by "The old Curiosity shop," or indulge in a classic like " A christmas Carol." Try and enjoy, and don't see the long-windedness as unecessary, but as more of an exploration into the wider world.
