I think you're right. Historical fiction is probably difficult to write. I never really thought about that before.

I think it's important to strive for historical accuracy, even in the details. It lends more realism and "credibility" to the story, albeit fictionalized to some extent. Dialogue should be fairly close to the period. Language and style of speech change over time, and contemporary expressions and idioms forced into a story that is set many decades ago just sound awkward and out of place. It can spoil the historical atmosphere the author is (or should be) trying hard to evoke.

Unless that's what you're intentionally going for.
This made me think of an anime (actually, multiple series) by a certain artist who was always mixing historical and contemporary genres. For example, one of his stories was set in the early Edo period in Japan, but everyone used modern slang (My personal favorite line from the whole series: "Screw that noise!" as spoken by a rogue samurai). The music was all hiphop, including one episode in which a character had his own beatboxer to provide background music to his soliloquy. It was hilarious.

However, I guess my example and this example aren't quite the same thing.

Yes, I agree. If dialogue, setting, technology, etc. from different time periods are intentionally juxtaposed for a certain effect, this can be taken as "artistic license" and can be quite interesting. For example, it's become fashionable to lift Shakespeare's plays out of the past and place them in a modern setting, retaining, of course, the original dialogue. I've seen several of these that were quite well done. But when anachronisms arbitrarily occur simply because of carelessness or lack of research, it (IMO) detracts from the story and lessens the impact of what otherwise could be an effective presentation.
