It seems so interesting to compare and contrast how peer pressure and toxic masculinity differ or are similar to the ones we experience nowadays.
Plus, I love character-driven books.

Thanks for the review! This seems like an interesting read, as the topic of toxic masculinity is one that needs addressing and it sounds like the author addressed it well. It’s also good that you found the characters relatable.

Playing Hurt by Gerald L Nardella deals with important issues, such as peer pressure and the insecurities resulting from living in broken homes. Character-driven narratives take it to a whole new level. Thanks for the beautiful review.

Read this and it's a good look at life in a small town and the insecurities that come with being raised in a broken home. Congrats on being BOTD.

Great review! As a sociology student I have studied the way that gender role socialization and the warped concept of masculinity causes the downfall of males in our society today. I am super excited to see the way that the author develops this theme as I believe it is very important that people become aware of the consequences of misinterpreting the concept of masculinity.

This one gave me mixed feelings. It seems like the author has captured some of the pressures young women faced during this time.I can say that this is incredibly accurate. It feels like a no win situation at many times, even after high school, and Nardella captures this fear and lack of fairness perfectly.
The author has masterfully developed the characters, which makes the story more interesting.

Sex is a crucial aspect of life that young adults need to comprehend before rushing into things. The writer of the book presents the pressures many Young Adults experience today about sex. It's an interesting book for teenagers to read because they might find some fine points that are helpful. Thank you for the concise and intriguing review.

The fact that this book is not a happy story and deals with teen peer pressure and sexuality makes me want to skip reading this one.

I am not a huge fan of content set in the sixties. I also do not think I am interested in the fact that it seems like this book is centered around teens having sex, so I do not think this one will be for me.

Playing Hurt by Gerald L. Nardella is a novel full of nostalgic about the past era of 1960, it was a period of social pressure on teenagers and how they manage this social pressure. In this story, the two teenagers Brian and Deanie, enter their senior year and they feel the impulse of sex but there is a conflict they feel towards sex, to have it or not.

Gerald L Nardella has depicted beautifully the social pressures teenagers faced regarding sex and relationships during that period as the parents want their teens to abstain from it and the pressure from their peers to indulge in it.
