I have never been to Botswana and I'd certainly like to check out the healthcare challenges that Ngozi writes about. Thanks for the review.

The themes reflected in this book make the plot already so intense. There's so much information about issues like HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy, rape, etc in this book. I like that it took us back in time to an era when these things were rampant and harsh. Government's attention should be drawn by this.

The author's writing covers very pertinent issues affecting our society today such as HIV/AIDS, suicide, rape and teenage suicide. I also find the friendship between Dineo and Tricia insightful because of the problems they share together. Thanks for the review.

"Trends and Patterns" by Ngozi Ezenwanyi Umunnakwe is a fictional account that explores the life of Dineo and her family, addressing personal and social issues like teenage pregnancy, rape, and HIV/AIDS in 2000s Botswana. Dineo, a matron at General Hospital, befriends patient Tricia, who narrates Dineo's story, highlighting generational crises and cultural influences. Adding it to my reading list.

I don't understand why would anyone want to write the fictional account that mainly dwells on the most horrible and inhuman incidents. What good can come out of such a story? Diseases, crimes, abuse and all other social issues are tragedies of our civilization and I have no desire to read about them.

This book is set in Botswana in the 2000s and highlights several personal and social issues that were prevalent—rape, teenage pregnancy, passion killing, suicide, and the scourge of HIV and AIDS—through the story of Dineo, who is battling all that in her family. Life has not been easy for them, for sure, and theirs is a story with lessons to learn from. Congrats on BOTD!

Thank you for your detailed overview of the book. I appreciate that you touched on the authors' deep dive into such social issues as, HIV, rape, and suicide. It helps make those issues more relatable to people that would otherwise may have never understood them.

Hi@graceruhara. I have just read your comments on the official review of "Trends and Patterns", and I would suggest that you add information about the family. The fact that for three generations a pregnancy occurred via rape while the high school girl was 16. I would also mention the suicide that was committed by Dineo's brother when his girlfriend broke up with him. There was a lot going on in this family that made the family the way it was. Hope this helps. @Mrlefty0706
