This is a novel detailing the hardships and struggles of one Cuban refugee, out to make a life in a new country, but beset with legal impediments and restrictions. For one thing, his identity is not established and he is as good as dead legally. He still has some good favors bestowed by fate when friends and benefactors came to his aid. Your review helps me understand the character of Gato a lot. I think we human beings have our positive and negative side. I deeply emphatise with Gato's character but I don't know if I will take him under my roof despite knowing him all these years. I will help him instead find another shelter and aid him with his administrative matters.
The compassion of the Demases to help Gato has made me warm to the couple but when you imply that perhaps they are doing this out of guilt, l am a little disappointed. But who are we to judge? When faced with a situation like this, will we help even if we feel guilt?
Your review has kindle my interest and I will definitely read the entire book.

A literary novel telling us about a couple who come out to help a homeless man to try to prove that he is alive. It is also good to not that guilt is the driving force pushing these couples to help. I also appreciate the fact that the book was professionally edited.

I'm only a few chapters in but I'm really enjoying the complexity of the characters. I agree w/ your 4 out of 4, but I did find 52o errors just in the little I've read.

Thanks for a great review, and the concept of someone being mistakenly declared dead is an interesting one, but I don't think this is the kind of novel for me.

The story about immigrants is always an interesting one to read. I congratulate you for this review. If there is one thing that bothers me, the issue of red tape in government offices.

I am always surprised since the red tape is only applied to the common citizen. The big shots will always have their way around the system.

Government red tape is a story all its own but the fact that

Citizen Cárdenas is a layered story; the characters’ motivations are conflicted, especially those of George and Alexia Demas.

certainly adds to the fascination of the read.
