When I was young, there was a grumpy old man who rented my family's ranch. I think I was around 8 or 9 when I first met him. And our first meeting was terrible because I thought he wanted to take my family's ranch from us; then when I got a year or two older, that was when I finally realized he was nice and learned what was his business there. I have a feeling that the old man in the story would turn out to be kind just like the guy I told you about. But what do I know? Anyways, great review!

This sounds like a really realistic and well-rounded book, just simply discussing life and people. I agree with you that humour would have been a good way to insert up some needed breaks in the narrative. Thanks for the review.

Wow, I am going to read this book. McDowell intrigues me already. I wonder why he has such an attitude and what might have contributed to it.

Your opening line brings back fond memories, which is a great idea for a book that deals with reminiscing.
I never thought this was a book better suited for children and teens, so I'm glad you cleared that up. I appreciate that the author took the time to develop the characters with depth, even for a simple story.
Great review!

The main theme of the story seems to be that of family. The book will be useful to both adults and young teens. Thanks for this insightful review. Congrats on this BOTD.

I like the idea of moral lessons in children's books. It's pertinent that they learn early that every action has a consequence. Well done to the author.

This is quite an interesting plot. The review actually made me curious about what happened exactly in the book.

This seems interesting. I wonder what will happen to them when they disobeyed Mr. McDonald. I am sad that there is no humor in this book though. Thanks for your review.

You have me wondering what happened in the tree house?? I like stories with a lesson to be learned. This one sounds wholesome.

This sounds almost like an adaption of Peter Cottontail's story but in human form. Interesting. Thanks for the review.

Congrats on BOTD. I'm going to have to save this for my niece. It can be so hard to find a good story that interests her and also teaches important life lessons and this one sounds like she would love it. Thanks for the review!
