Thanks for the review, but I don't care for character-driven stories, so to note that the author "depicts the characters’ self-reflection, the changing relationship dynamics between characters in different stages of their lives, and how their growth—and sometimes lack of it—affects how they continue to deal with events that come their way." was actually a turn-off for me rather than a reason to read this. I do like the idea of "traveling" to different places, though.

I think I'll probably give this one a miss. It sounds like the tale of someone making a series of bad decisions, which would become irritating after a while.

A work of fiction with unforgettable trips to towns and small and little known areas of America. One of the trips details the story of a pregnant woman who finds great misfortune in her travels. Recommended for those who like a compelling narrative based on the characters and with a good sense of humor.

Wow! I cannot imagine how much adversity that poor woman had to endure. Sounds like a trip of a lifetime and I can see how this book would be very character-driven. Imagine her surprise when she not only gives birth early, but to more than one baby! Thanks for the wonderful review!

This novel is, without a doubt, one of the best character-driven narratives I’ve ever read. From the start, I was drawn into Martha’s personality, her complexities, and her quirks, despite the fact that I questioned most of her decisions. Despite Martha having reservations about telling lies, she told plenty of them and could whip them on the spot. At times, I thought some of her lies were unnecessary. At other times, I found it amusing how she fooled those she encountered with her lies up until I realized that she had fooled me too! The fact that I ate up one of her lies and was none the wiser impressed and surprised me because I thought I knew everything about her.
Character-driven stories are usually my favorites, especially if the characters, as you mention, are complex. We, as humans, are often complicated and contradictory such as the example you mention of Martha's lying.
And I love an unreliable narrator!
This book is definitely for me. Thank you for a great review!

The review is like the story itself. Well articulated without reservations. The story finds its way to fascination. Initially, I felt lost at some point but when the conversations kicked off, clarity struck in. Congrats on being BOTD.

A fictional character- driven story about a young girl who gets pregnant and escapes the wrath of her father. I like character driven stories, and if your review is anything to go by, this is definitely my book type. Thanks for the wonderful review

What an exciting way to write about a book. I like mostly the fact that you identified the moves and the tricks that the writer uses to keep the reader hooked. She has me, definitely. Lying is one of the main themes, lying from necessity, and I am very curious to know what was the lie that caught you.
A great book paired by a great reviewer. :tiphat:

Thank you for your penetrating review, it is very touching and I enjoyed reading it. I am a bit disappointed to hear about the large cast because I am very bad at tracking multiple characters, especially when everyone has a name. Nevertheless, I definitely want to read this book. What has she done to lose her babies? Why did the father leave her when he found out she was pregnant? I must find out! :o

You have peaked my interest in the novel with your wonderful & thorough review. Thank you. It sounds like there is a lot of characters, some not important or relevant that we don't need to learn about while others more of main characters/roles that we need to get to know. Though the way you talk about so many people, I hope I don't get distracted because I've read books that had multiple people that can confuse you and take away from the main plot & characters and get lost & distracted, taking away from the relevant & important people/characters.
The main character sounds interesting, maybe a little intriguing. Pregnant with multiple babies, chasing down the baby daddy, car breaking down & leaving it behind, hitch hiking with babies till she loses them, telling lies along the way... Can't wait to meet her LoL.
Looking forward to the book and thanks again for the thorough & wonderful review telling me what I need to know about the book & interesting me in reading the book.

Thanks for the wonderful review! This sounds like a very interesting book. I have read the sample and found it intriguing. I'm glad to hear there is also humor in the book and I look forward to finding out what lies Martha tells as she goes. In the short part I have read she told several and seemed to think of them rather quickly! :eusa-think:
