I have not encountered a book like this one on this site before, but I automatically thought of the OWN network of programming. I am always happy to see stories written about people and communities of color. I think that the author provided a real perspective on being black in America and the constant challenges that they face. I think that the symbolism of the mirrors has to do with seeing your past or seeing how things really are instead of how you want them to be.

To be quite honest the title of the book attracted me. I'm a bit disappointed to learn that title is not closely related to the story. However, I do like survival agianst all odds kind of stories. So I'll be checking this book out. Thank you for a detailed review!!

The book sounds like a good read. The characters are realistic and well-formed which makes any book shine. It's too bad the mirror concept isn't played out well. I think this is too graphic for me. Nice review though.

I like that this title places focus on the community advancement that can be achieved through education, all while battling racial discrimination and the prejudices that often accompany the aspects of everyday life. Thanks for sharing your impressions!

This novel sounds like it could be based on a true story. Yvonne, a single, teenaged African-American, raises her son, Mister to have a better future. She, then, has other children and gets married. Her son Derrick sounds like an entrepreneur and her son, Junior, is good at sports. The family deals with death, abuse, and poverty, but seems to pull through all the adversity. The fast pace and good character development, along with the good editing of the novel, all make it seem worthwhile to read. Good review!

From reading the sample pages this book had me interested from the start. It seems to deal with big themes and I imagine it must have a lot to say about them. It seemed to be well-written as well. I'd like to know more about it but I appreciate not wanting to give away any spoilers.
