Seven at Two Past Five by Tara Basi is a mind-boggling free fall into the paradoxical world of an old woman named Seven at Two Past Five. She also calls herself Abi, though others insist she has another name she cannot or will not recall. Abi’s isolated world is tightly structured and ordered. Her role is button maker, for which she is fed and clothed regularly. She suffers relentlessly from night terrors until one night a sweet dream turns her existence upside down.

Subjected to judgments, experiments, psychoanalysis, mind games, bewildering interactions and traumatic degradation, Abi fears for her life as she fights for truth to be revealed. Abi encounters all manner of strange individuals who are intent on helping her or prosecuting her. Somehow, she finds compassion for all even those who treat her poorly. Her path leads outside of her comfortable norm all the while pursued by the ever-present ticking of time. She struggles to maintain courage and self-confidence in the face of nonsensical scenarios. Will she be released from judgments and return to her ordered life?

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . I liked most the writing style which is emotive, descriptive and vibrant. The editing is pristine. I liked least how ambiguous and rambling the story is yet, this is also its’ charm as it accurately relates the complexity of life. However, the story is challenging to follow if the reader is seeking a traditional story line. It would be a suitable read for those who enjoy feeling bewildered, word-play, or those who have interest in psychology. A cautionary note: readers with unresolved trauma may find the book could trigger latent emotional responses.

This book leaves the reader questioning if this story is a fascinating glimpse into the mind of someone struggling with mental health challenges. Is Abi navigating the hospital and legal system? Abi’s perceptions of the world she encounters while defending herself are far outside the bounds of normally accepted reality. Or are they? Her perceptions are poignantly raw, acute, and relatable.

Seven at Two Past Five includes elements of power and control dynamics, religious fanaticism, shady justice systems, sado-masochism, body shaming, devaluing of the feminine and elder abuse. It is at times confusing and simultaneously sheds light on the underbelly of human reality. As Abi rides the roller coaster of her existence, she comes to understand the truth of who she is. This unsettling tale leaves us questioning the meaning of life.
