India in Chaos is a fabulous assessment of India’s government. India has suffered 70 years of self-rule and has descended into chaos. Its government has become warring factions with money squandered on attracting voters instead of providing infrastructure, education, housing, hospitals, water, and waste management.

K.C. Agrawal has written a desideratum on the ills of India, why the constitution has failed and suggested a complete and detailed plan to pull India back from the brink of self-destruction, to bring back its sense of self-esteem and to do right by the people of India. The presentation of the information in India in Chaos is creative and extremely helpful in understanding the arguments. The formatting is restful to the eye and mind and instrumental in extracting detailed information.

They have a saying in India, “Everyone, of course, agrees that the politics and the administration could have, over the years been mismanaged better.” But no humor in that when people commit suicide because they cannot live.“Cow Subsidy” (Tehelka, 18 July 2009, clipping 10). There is an entrenched culture of charities, dole-outs, and quotas and licenses that add bribery to “economic slavery” and do nothing for the essential development of the country.

The word, democracy does not guarantee fairness in a nation, having checks and balances which work is a better guarantee, and nominating the appropriate people to govern is another guarantee. K.C. Agrawal has provided the most thought-provoking book about a government that I have ever read. It is more than a starting point for addressing the wrongs in Indian governance. It is a roadmap to success. He should gain support from all influential people in India, and from the U.N. and other countries who could help with their interest and influence. Notably, the U.K., with its previous association with India.

The “full belly,” thesis suggests that unless people can work and feel empowered, they are incapable of being active in civil or political rights; echoing Maslow’s hierarchy of needs for physiological safety, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization. What a great country, India, has been and could be once more if we all support K.C. Agrawal. He expresses a noble purpose for India, to bear it to glory as befitting its fascinating past.

All governments, not just India, must be watchful that “democracy,” if that is their chosen form of government, stays unbiased. To be aware of the harmful effects of interest groups and continue to drive towards the good of the people; also be open to relevant discussions and to ensure that checks and balances are maintained. We all need to stand up for the rule of law governing a nation, and every citizen is subject to that law, including the lawmakers themselves.

I rate India in Chaos 4 out of 4 stars, and wish, we would all support K.C. Agrawal, in his endeavor, to preserve the Constitution of India. A worthy life’s work, if ever there was one. I do not rate it 3 out of 4 stars because of its tremendous importance to the beautiful people of India which can overcome a grammatical error or two. I recommend this book to all politicians, churchmen, historians, and all people who can add to the voice of India, K.C. Agrawal. The voice of India can speak to everyone through this book.
