After Finishing "The Woman in White"

I was wholly disappointed by the ending. I cannot begin to describe my feelings of complete disgust with the author.
However, the two major villains, Sir Percival and Count Fosco were both very intriguing and humorous characters..and now that I've finished with the book, I'm hungry for more intriguing, flawed, comical characters.
But I don't know where to look. It seems so DIFFICULT to find a good set of characters. Does anyone have recommendations for me? I'd like to find a book that my friend and I can read together, so..you know...good plot and good characters are at the top of my qualification list.
I know this is a tall order guys, but I'm throwing myself on your mercy
