Malazan Book of The Fallen

Im just starting the third in the series and I'm wondering does everyone find it as difficult to get through as I do? Iunderstand Steven Erikson dooesnt want to hold the readers hand through the book but i wish there were something a bit more indepth than the glossary to get to grips with the reality of his world.
