The novel The Spirit of Want is written by William H. Cole. The author has weaved an intriguing story about love, mistrust, deceit, adultery and family. The author teaches us that the grass is not always greener and sweeter on the other side. William's also teaches us that we should not blindly follow people because some people are not what they seem to be.

Lucy is the daughter of A. J. MacMiel whom he adopted. Elizabeth is MacMiel's biological daughter. Lucy feels her adopted parents love Elizabeth more than her. She is very resentful towards them. She tries to be better than Elizabeth. Lucy feels unloved and very insecure. She is ambitious and becomes a very successful lawyer. She gets drunk at one of her father's parties and drives Luke home. On the way home they meet with an accident and Lucy is charged with manslaughter. She does not love Luke but agrees to marry him. Once they are married Luke can not testify against her. She falls pregnant and wants to have an abortion. Luke convinces her to have the baby. She as a baby girl whom she named Jenifer, but she has no motherly instinct towards the baby. Lucy defends Hower Bain in a court battle. She is very attracted to him and helps him to clear his name. She leaves Luke and Jenifer and follows him to Africa. In Africa, she realizes she had made a mistake in trusting Hower because he is a fraud. She tries to rectify her mistakes but it was too late.

The characters are all well-developed. The plot of the story was well-thought-out and not predictably. There were a lot of twist and turns in the story. I like the character of Lucy. She is a very complexed person with a lot of flaws. All she wanted was to fit in and be loved. I did not like that she left her daughter. She should have tried to be a good mother.

I feel that her father should have told her the trust. It would have made a big difference in her life. She felt her real parent's abandoned her. She deserved to have known the truth. He was a coward and ashamed of his mistake.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The novel was professionally edited because I only found one mistake. I recommend this book to readers who to love read about romance, drama and suspense. I enjoyed reading this novel and look forward to reading more books by this author.

I reviewed this story too, and I did not find the fascination with it that you did. But your outline of the plot is way better than mine. I kept getting lost between the characters and kept hoping for a happy ending. Just a romantic, I guess.
