The following is a review of a fiction book The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles. The book was published in 2016 and was set in Atlanta.
Luke Osbourne a doctor by profession went to a long-time friend A.J. MacMiel party. There he met his two daughters Lucy and Elizabeth. After the party, Lucy drove home with Luke and her negligent driving attitude got them into an accident.
Less than a day after the accident a woman was found in the vicinity of where they had the accident. They both went on trial and Lucy was found guilty (she was the drive and she had had a lot to drink) of “vehicular manslaughter”.
They got married after six months and Lucy was also exonerated. Lucy got a case of child rape by a church Reverend, Hover Bain and had to constantly go to Georgia where the defendant hailed from and the incident happened.
She fell pregnant and felt the need to not have the pregnancy but was talked out of it by Elizabeth, her sister. She gave birth to a girl. Meanwhile, Bain was found guilty of child rape.
Bain did not want her to represent him any longer but she insisted on being her lawyer. Her job on Bain’s case consumed her too much that she was rarely seen with her daughter Jennifer who only spent time with her sister Elizabeth and their mother Agnes.
The MacMiels seemed to be people who were a little bit distant from the church as every church leader they went to they were also invited to join the church and it also happened to Lucy when she represented Bain-he kept asking her if she loved God.
The case for Bain continued to keep Lucy busy and as she busied herself with an upcoming trial her daughter’s nanny fell sick.
One could now tell that all those efforts Lucy tried putting to defending Bain were out of love because she followed him to Ghana where he was on a church mission and even ended up staying longer than expected and only had to live on the pictures of her daughter when she missed her.
Jennifer got used to being taken care of by her grandmother and aunt. Meanwhile, Luke and Elizabeth came to a realisation they loved each other when they at the beach house. There might be a reason why she never had a boyfriend- she was meant for Luke.
Lucy was, in fact, Elizabeth’s half-sister and Elizabeth always knew about but kept quiet to protect the reputation of her father. However, Lucy had always thought she adopted and she felt unwanted which tainted her livelihood.
In Ghana, Lucy was sick from rat poison and was lucky it was discovered by the doctor.
In Atlanta, people started to investigate A.J. and things started coming out which implicated many peoples in A.J.’s circle.
Lucy returned to Atlanta and found their house up for sale. Jennifer fell sick and Elizabeth felt the need to tell Lucy. And went to California for a job and that she had now had to live without Bain and Luke. She helped a lady who was running for congresswoman and she knew how to do it-people always seemed cheerful when she spoke.
This made her wish that she were the one running for congresswoman position to be able to answer to the debate questions that Maria Sanchez (the lady who was running for congresswoman) failed to answer.
But, Bain came looking for her again and asked that she took him back. He continued with his church services and now with elevated services where he got the point of making the disabled walk again.
Sadly, Lucy got sick and needed a kidney transplant. Hower may not a man despair after all-he went to tell Luke and Elizabeth. But appalling allegations never ceased coming out against Hower and this time was tax evasion and sexual assaults.
Elizabeth offered to donate a kidney to Lucy but it was late and it worsened which led to her death eventually. No doctor could save her as she had also been drinking too much for the condition she was in.
To sum up, the essence of the book tells a story of two doctors: A.J. MacMikie a renowned doctor who practiced medicine for a long time and Luke who had only been in the industry for a few years. They were both friends and the former had to daughters who both fell in love with the latter. One of the daughters was always made to believe she was adopted when she was in fact not which made her feel she was not part of the family. She was a great lawyer, who turned romantically to her client whom she represented claiming it was all efforts of proving the innocence of the defendant while neglecting her daughter and husband. Having read the ‘The Surgeon’s Wife’ which I think this book is a sequel of, the plot has been fairly possible to follow as both A.J. and Luke, as doctors were friends like the doctors (Clayton and Mike) in ‘The Surgeon’s Wife’. It was well edited and I thus rate it 4 out of 4. I would recommend the book to any adult.
