The Spirit of Want is an amazing novel by William H. Coles. The book exceeded my expectations. It turns out that the author is quite well aware of the secrets and the weaknesses of the human soul.

The main female character in the novel is Lucy. She is adopted and feels ignored by her parents. Lucy is moody and spontaneous. She meets Luke at a party and behaves quite indifferently to him. However, after an accident they have later that night, they form a strange relationship, which soon leads to their marriage. Their family life is not satisfying. Lucy doesn’t have time for her husband or for their baby daughter. She dedicates all her time to a case and neglects her family. Lucy gets involved in a love affair with her client. This ruins not only her career but also her private life. Obsessed with love, Lucy follows her lover in Africa only to find out that he is not the man he pretends to be. Disappointed and hurt, she returns home. However, she is not prepared to face what awaits her there.

Elizabeth is Lucy’s sister. At the beginning of the novel, she is almost unnoticeable. However, as the plot develops, Elizabeth’s role becomes more important. By the end of the story, she has turned into a role model for a decent human.

The Spirit of Want is not simply a romance. It deals with some important moral issues. It points out the significant role of the family in one’s development. When a family is united, it can overcome all the difficulties. Unfortunately, when the members of the family do not respect and support each other, they are doomed to destruction. The novel also raises the question whether a person who makes a serious mistake deserves forgiveness or not.

My favorite part of the novel is the one which describes Elizabeth’s selflessness. She takes care of Lucy’s daughter but never tries to replace Lucy from the heart of the child. Elizabeth’s nobleness is stunning. There is not anything about the novel which I do not like. I enjoyed every single page of it.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it kept my attention from the first to the last page. I recommend this book to all lovers of romances. Maybe it is not a good choice for those who prefer action-packed books. The novel was professionally edited, and I did not notice any typos.
