Shot by Harp, by D.E. Hopper, is about Harp Harper, who is retired from the army. Harper has a lot of physical scars credited to his several dangerous tours of duty. One afternoon, while he is in an old saloon in a neighborhood in Trenton, New Jersey, a female lawyer approaches him and tells him that a late female cousin, Pauline, left him an inheritance, which includes a farm and a dog named Fart. Harper, who is finally adjusting to a civilian life of peace, is ready to sell the farm to the first person who makes a good offer, but after reading a letter written by Pauline, he decides to spend a little time on the farm to see what happens next.

Meanwhile, there is an anonymous man who desperately wants to buy the farm for reasons best known to himself, and he’ll eliminate anyone who stands in his way of acquiring the property in no time. Unknown to the anonymous man, Harper has recruited a crew of tough veterans with disabilities, who don’t like others driving them up the wall.

Exploring the themes of greed, payback, loyalty, and survival, this book is captivating and suspenseful. Involving crime and mysteries, it comprises fascinating action. It’s been a long while since I read such a fast-paced and gripping action novel. It’s well narrated, giving vivid description, and the conversations are interesting and witty on most occasions. Also, the plot is airtight, having intriguing twists. As the story unfolds, some hidden stuff are revealed. Really, it’s a satisfactory read, and I enjoyed reading it. After the story ended, I still wanted more of it.

The author described the characters very well; they are believable. The protagonist and the supporting characters are strange but strong persons. None of them likes to lose, both the good and bad guys. Due to the nature of the people in the story, the book is filled with profane words. So, if you don’t like novels with bad language, then you may want to pass this one. Moreover, it involves romance, and there is a little erotic content.

Altogether, I rate Shot by Harp 4 out of 4 stars. It doesn’t deserve less than 4 stars because it’s well narrated and exciting. It’s a worthwhile read. In addition, it was exceptionally well edited; I didn’t see any grammar or typographical errors. I recommend it to anyone who needs a good crime and thriller novel to read.

This sounds like a really interesting and well-written book! The fact that the dog is named "Fart" makes me chuckle a bit... Thanks for your review!

You had me at a dog named Fart. That alone makes me want to read the book. I'm very curious what he finds on the farm he inherited. Thanks.

The names of the characters and even the dog are so quirky! If not for the plot, I might just read the book for the funny names. Would be interesting to find out what the great deal about the farm really was.

I like the idea that Harp gets his army buddies to help him defend his farm. It would be interesting to see what part the dog plays in the story, other than having a unique name! This book seems to have many positive aspects. I would like to read this one!
