I Am What I Am is a contemporary fiction novel written by Jerry Lawyer. It is a history of a man’s choices in life and how they affect the life of his daughter who never knew him.

This book tells the tale of the lives of a father and daughter from two different viewpoints. Sally, a young married woman, is beginning the life she always wanted. She wants a normal life with a loving husband. Sally was adopted and never knew her parents. Her adoptive mother loved her and gave her the best childhood she could. However, Sally always felt that something was missing from her life. Then the package arrived. It contained the mystery of her birth parents and the reason she was given up for adoption. Sally learns her family history from a series of audio tapes her father recorded. As she learns about her father’s life and the reasons for the choices he made, she begins to find her true self.

The author has created a captivating tale that caught my attention from the very beginning. The story begins with the daughter, Sally, receiving a package from her biological father. The story then switches between Sally’s life and her father’s life, as told on the audio tapes in the package. This was a unique way to tell the story. I thoroughly enjoyed how the author tied the two storylines together. It kept me enthralled to the end.

The main characters are Sally and her biological father, Zeke. Sally’s character seemed a little shallow at the beginning, but as the story progressed, I felt like I knew her better. She slowly evolved throughout the book. On the other hand, her father was an interesting character from day one. His life was described on the tapes, beginning with when he was a young child. I was drawn into his life immediately.

The author has written a story that makes us consider our choices in life. The main point of this book is why the father gave his child up for adoption. Dig deeper into the story and we can understand why her father did the things he did. We may not agree with some of his choices, but if we understand his reasoning, maybe we’ll understand some of our own choices in life.

The book contained mild profanity and mild sexual situations. I found very few grammatical mistakes. The book appears to be professionally edited. Based on my above observations, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to mature adults who enjoy entertaining fiction novels. I honestly can’t put it into a particular genre of writing. It would appeal to a variety of readers. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

I like how the author switches perspectives back and forth between the father and the daughter to better tell the story. I also love how the characters are well-developed. This book sounds like a great read! Thanks for your review!

Interesting. I love that Sally gets a package from her biological parents. That she learns about her father through tapes is unique. I'm intrigued by why she was given up. Thanks!

Interesting review. But this does not feel like a book I would like to read. If I am reading about someone's person life, and their choices, I would rather read about real people instead of fictitious characters.

It is fascinating to see how an adopted child always has that longing to find their biological parents. The author does this in a unique way that you have made seem compelling to the reader. I thoroughly enjoyed your enthusiastic praise for this book. You have convinced me that I need to read this one!

A fascinating premise, being told from two separate perspectives. Reminds us all how a single decision or moment in time can affect not only the rest of our life, but also the complete existence of someone else's life collaterally. Thanks for the helpful review!
