André’s Reboot tells the story of a robot finding his humanity. André is the creation of Dr. Strauss. He was originally created to help the Strauss family with manual chores and labor. That changes one day when André saves the lives of Dr. Strauss’ two children, Billy and Becky. The children are playing outside when a dangerous hailstorm comes out of nowhere. André takes matters into his own hands when he quickly grabs the children to bring them to safety. This event sparks a series of events that will lead André to his full potential.

This event also opens Dr. Strauss’ mind to André’s potential. He realizes that his creation is so much more than just a household laborer. André’s ability to think and feel are greater than Dr. Strauss realized. His family also starts seeing André as a member of the family. This book starts with the story of Andre’s humble beginnings and shares his journey to becoming an influential force with the President of the United States of America.

Steve Coleman, the author, exceeds in his description of André’s perspective. As a reader, I felt like I could understand André’s developing emotions. This is a key reason why I like this book so much. For example, he writes, “Previously, everything had been: ‘push lawnmower to cut grass; carry groceries into house; mop kitchen floor.’ The tasks became more complex and, more importantly, they became somewhat predictable.”. I believe almost everyone can relate to those tasks. We do certain things that we repeat every day, and we don’t even think about it. We wake up. We go to work. We do household chores. We go to bed and repeat the next day. We are machines in that way.

André is also specific with his wording. He mentions timelines such as “1.32 seconds” and “13.8 minutes”. The author has great attention to detail. It’s this attention that makes André’s perspective seem more real. It is well edited, for the most part. I enjoyed the consistent theme throughout the book. It was subtle and made the reader really think about the situations André goes through.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I happily give the rating of 4 out of 4 stars. This is a great book for those interested in science-fiction mixed with some political undertones. It makes me think of other famous related works but has its own story to tell. It is a thought-provoking journey of what it means to be human.
