The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles revolves around Luke Osborne and the entire MacMiel family. It tells the tale of each and every one of them, from A. J and Agnes’ strained marriage relations to Luke’s, Elizabeth’s and Lucy’s love lives. Close to all of their entire life experiences have been covered in this book.

The role that family plays in our day to day lives has come out clear. When Lucy expressed intentions of wanting to get rid of her pregnancy, Luke, Agnes and Elizabeth persuaded her into rubbishing those thoughts.

The hardships that arise within marriage have also been highlighted very well. There seems to be some apathy in Luke and Lucy’s marriage. Lucy seems to be devoid of feelings for Luke. A.J and Agnes’ marriage is also on the rocks. A.J throws Agnes into the cold after putting up their house for sale in a manner that shows his lack of care for her. This serves as a clarion call to all those with a desire for married life. That they should always keep in mind that marriage is never a bed of roses.

Luke is an inspiration to a wide majority of husbands who have annoying wives. Despite Lucy’s annoying temper and lack of care, he still remains to be a loving and dedicated husband. He even helps her find a kidney donor long after they have divorced. This challenges the reader to always have a good and forgiving heart despite all the terrible injustices that people might do to them.

The power of love has also been depicted very well. Lucy loves Hower Bain to the point of sacrificing her entire career and marriage. She gets disbarred after it is discovered that she’s been having sexual relations with Hower, who happens to be her client at that time. She also leaves Luke and Jennifer for Bain. This shows the extent to which love can make one do crazy things.

Throughout the entire book, it is also worth noting that there were no grammatical errors whatsoever. This shows the enormous dedication and hard work that must have been applied during its editing and writing.

There were also very few instances of profane language use. However, their appearance never brought any distaste to the book.

I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It is an engrossing read which leaves the reader craving for more. I would recommend it to everyone at large.
