Review by Sufi_khan -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a story within a story that is imaginative, entertaining and full of action. It is set in the Olympic National Park in the Pacific Northwest which forms the backdrop for both stories, one set in modern times and the other presumably tens of thousands of years ago. I rate this book a 4 out of 4 for its beautiful narration, strong story and its ability to take the reader on a magical journey through the pages.
The way history has been shaped in various parts of the world is always fascinating to learn about. And if this history is about ancient people, maybe the first people to have populated our world, then it is even more so. The author has used his imagination to paint a vivid picture of early human life as it may have existed long before historical times. He has woven the older story into the current time by re-telling history as a vision experienced by one of the main characters. In the story, 12-year-old Sarah earns the moniker Strong Heart because of her feisty nature.
I enjoyed how the author was able to narrate both stories side by side and pique the readers’ interest in the unfolding of both plots. I especially appreciated how the author has not given unnecessary descriptive details about the physical settings that can become boring. While reading this book, I felt I was experiencing everything that the characters went through, whether it was the hike through the jungle trails or the arduous journey across the frigid seas. Although some readers may find the sentence structure abrupt, I think it lent beautifully to the setting in prehistoric times where the focus of human life would have been survival and not much else.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good stories, those who ponder how life may have been for very early humans, those with an interest in genetic migration, and those who are interested in legends and folktales. I think young preteens the same age as the protagonist Sarah might especially enjoy this book for the sense of adventure the book imparts to the reader. This book contains no profanity or inappropriate content and is suitable for all ages and backgrounds.
Often after reading a good book, I wonder about the motivations of the author. After reading Strong Heart, I felt like I was learning from the author’s experiences on the sea perhaps, and I am grateful for that. Although this is a work of fiction, it does not take away from the fact that there is so much we do not know about our world. Many possibilities exist and it is thanks to the author that we can ponder over one such possibility. Read Strong Heart to find out more.
