Review by Rwhitt21 -- Guardian of Deceit
Darwin was orphaned a little over five years ago when his parents tragically passed in a car accident. His aunt has been his guardian ever since, on a promise his mother and her had made before the accident. Now unable to continue caring for him due to her health issues, Darwin's aunt is sending him to live with his cousin Luther. Luther is a very rich and famous NFL player. Darwin has only met his cousin twice in his life so he is very unsure on what to expect although he remains positive and hopeful. But Darwin soon finds that Luther's way of raising him is going to be much different than the way his aunt had been. Luther, despite all his success, battles his own issues with alcohol, drugs, and gambling. Although Darwin lacks a positive role model in his cousin, he does meet a man named Dr. Malverne on his plane ride to Luther's. Darwin looks up to Dr. Malverne because he aspires to be a doctor himself like his father was. Dr. Malverne is intrigued by this and the fact that he will be moving close to where Dr. Malverne lives. Never having a son of his own, Dr. Malverne looks out for young Darwin and helps him out in big ways. Darwin has a lot of other people come into his life over the years to come. Each and every one leaving an everlasting mark on Darwin, shaping him into the person he becomes.
Guardian of Deceit is a character development drama spanning over many years that sees not only Darwin's development, but the development of other characters in the story as well. We see how each relationship Darwin gets involved with leaves a small mark on him and how he approaches the next. His friendships also have a role in shaping him into the person he becomes. We see the results Luther's addictions have on his girlfriend and how it changes her as well as himself. All the characters in this story seem to go through heartache at some point in their own ways. Some in the same ways.
Things I liked most about this book is how simple and easy to read it is. The characters are all very believable and feel real. Nobody is overly flawed or overly perfect. Each character has their own flaws, even if minor, which makes them all feel very human. William H. Coles does a wonderful job telling the story and kept me very engaged. I liked how we got to see other characters grow alongside Darwin. The book is very well edited and certainly appears to have been professionally done which is very nice. I really could not find any negatives about this book. Overall it was a very good read.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for my inability to find any negatives. It was a very well written story and editing was top notch. It kept me engaged and I found myself unable to put it down even during times when there wasn't anything particularly exciting going on in the story. The story flows very well and doesn't have any parts that drag on or become boring trying to get through. Just a really chill, constantly moving forward story.
The type of people that will enjoy this book will be people that like to get to know characters and see them develop and grow. This story has a nice touch of not only showing the characters grow individually, but also as a whole since everyone's lives seem to intertwine with one another. People who enjoy dramas will enjoy all the drama filled relationships in a story where heartbreak is a common theme. Anybody looking for a nice pleasant story that doesn't necessarily have you holding your breathe with every page should also give this book a try. All in all this is a great little story that shouldn't disappoint most readers.
