Official Review: Suburban Tales by I.C. Roby
Suburban Tales by I. C. Roby is a small book that is mainly a collection of poems that focus on life in the suburbs, as well as the poet’s personal experiences. The poet writes his poems in a very direct style, breaking the traditional structure of poems.
The poet describes suburban life in many of his poems. More specifically, the poet focuses on some elements of nature in the suburbs, as well as the way people live in the suburbs. Moreover, the poet discusses and explores her own experiences while maturing and growing. Due to the fact that this book is a collection of poems, every poem in the book tends to have different themes, as well as a different design.
This book contains a few positive attributes. Firstly, the fact that the poet utilizes poetic devices, as well as linguistic techniques, engages the reader, grasping his/her attention. Furthermore, what I liked most about this book was that it did not have any errors, which increases the poet’s professionalism, improving her credibility.
Nevertheless, the book also includes numerous negative characteristics. To be more precise, the poems in the book often lack cohesion, as they do not follow a logical flow, making it difficult for the reader to follow the poem. Additionally, the poems lack creativity, as they seem like pieces of prose because the poet has not managed to create a sense of elegance and figurativeness in her poems. Lastly, what I disliked the most about this book was that I encountered some vulgar, profane, and inappropriate phrases. There were also plenty of phrases related to sexual encounters, which the reader may find deeply disturbing and distracting.
The best-suited audience for this book is an audience of adult readers who are interested in poetry related to suburbs. More analytically, young readers and adolescents should not read this book, as the book contains many profane expressions that should not be read by non-adult readers. Besides this, readers who are not interested in poetry will most likely find this book boring and monotonous. To add to this, because there are some references to gods, atheists may not wish to read this book, while I also advise Christians not to read this book, because of its paganistic references.
Consequently, I rate this book with 2 out of 4 stars. The reason for not giving this book a higher rating was the fact that the poet did not manage to successfully create intriguing poems. However, I did not rate it lower, because some poetic devices are present in the poems.
