Review by ernest mwangemi -- Culture Man by Guy Cook
Superheroes stories will never disappoint you. Culture man by Guy Cook is one of those extremely entertaining novels on superpowers. At first, I thought it's a book talking about some guy who loved the culture and I almost assumed it but I felt really good after I read it because of the nature of the story and how it flows. I just said to myself that whoever said never judge a book by its cover was referring to this book.
Guy Cook starts the book introducing the reader to a character named Rob who works as a sales manager in a certain electrical company and during his free time he enjoys writing blogs for his website. The book starts with Rob trying to plan what he calls culture time. He intends to at least visit one cultural centre every week and blog about it. I loved his idea of visiting the cultural centre in order to know more about them as it reminded me of how important it is to know our culture as it's what preserves our history and defines who we are.
During one of his culture days, he was bitten by a one-foot long lizard. The incidence happened after he had moved from Marianne's house. While still in the house he had managed to get himself inside Marianne's secret lab where she used to perform her experiments trying to come up with a substance that contained some superpowers.
I enjoyed how the story was building up and getting more interesting with every chapter I went through. It happened that Rob had mistakenly applied the substance he found in the lab on his bread thinking it was butter and swallowed it. Now the swallowing of the substance combining with the lizard bite forms the beginning of great story and suspense. Before the swallowing of the substance from the lab and the lizard bite, Rob had issues with his joints and muscles but after the two incidents, Kate(Rob’s physiotherapist) confirmed that he was fine and even stronger than he was earlier. He just told Kate that the lizard was the reason for the sudden change in his body.
Now imagine yourself in a situation where you visited some cultural places and blogged about them then later someone starts stealing valuable things from those places you visited and blogged about. A masked ”superman” invaded Winchester and was stealing precious items from the various cultural places. Eyewitnesses described how powerful the masked thief was and how quickly he left the scene after collecting what he wanted. He was very fast than any human being can be.
Rob realized that he had gained mysterious powers and fully embraced them. He even thinked about using the powers to win a sporting tournament. He decides to join a tennis tournament and try to win the trophy. On the other hand, he wants to do some good things for Winchester. He badly wants to win a trophy and he also wants to arrest the masked ”superman” who was terrorizing Winchester. What will he do?. The only way to find out what happens next is through reading the book for yourself and find out what happened.
Guy Cook creativity especially the vivid descriptions grabs the readers attention as it makes the reader feel like whatever is happening is just right next to him/her.
The story plot and the build-up to the climax was well thought out and the characterization was not disappointing. The book was well edited and was free from mistakes except for just one grammar error. It's for this reason that I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars and I confidently say that it's suitable to be read by anyone who is familiar with the English language.
I liked everything about the book and disliked nothing about it.
