[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Fruit and Veggie ABC Book" by Mary Lee.]
The Fruit and Veggie ABC Book is a short and sweet book that is beautifully done. I have a 3 year old and a 10 month old and as I read this, I realize that I had their full attention. I really don’t know what genre this book would fall under, but I can surely say this is for babies and early toddlers. The only thing I have bad in this review is that I read the description on this book, “Ed the dragon and his sister love fruits and veggies. Join them as they explore 26 wonderful healthy foods from A to Z!” and was really disappointed I truly thought the book was at least going to have more content. That said even through my disappointment at first I still gave the book a rating of 4 stars. I am going out to buy the hard copy for my daughter.
In the beginning we are introduce to the two dragons like characters, Ed and Squish. Both are beautifully drawn and are very child friendly to look at. Since this book is about fruits and veggies, every letter of the alphabet has a dedicated fruit or veggie.
The design of the book is very simple, but still colorful enough to keep a small child’s attention for a short while.
What I really liked about the book it that the author did not put the characters on every page and that she was able to keep the focus on the alphabet by doing so. When we did see the dragons though it was mostly Squish, Ed seemed to only have one page, so, I feel since the book was for both of them he should have been included more. Squish’s character is so adorable when he would pop up with the letters my 3 year old would laugh our favorite is the letter J which is for Jalapeno little Squish demonstrated just how dangerous a Jalapeno could be.
I didn’t find much else that I would change as the book is sort of spot on but I would definitely change the description, as it is very misleading. I truly thought the book was going to be a story in which the two dragons made their way through and adventure and encountered fruits and veggies along the way.
I enjoyed the book and would highly recommend this to friends with small kids. This book is a very colorful first learner compare to other ABC books out there. The colors of the pages are bright and simple.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
