Review by rjohnston815 -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Strong heart by Charlie Sheldon is a beautifully written novel about a young girl, Sarah; her grandfather, Tom; his friend, William (aka Willeye or Eye); and Eye’s daughter, Myra. After Sarah is dropped off on Tom’s doorstep by his ex-wife, the four set out on a camping expedition in Olympic National Park. This trip, planned prior to Sarah’s arrival, is an attempt to locate the burial sight of Tom’s grandfather, who died and was buried by Tom decades earlier in the park. Tom is hesitant to bring Sarah, but is convinced by Eye (and Myra) that it would be the best course of action. During the journey, Sarah runs off and is lost for eight days reappearing suddenly during a thunderstorm with an unbelievable tale.
Sarah’s story takes the reader to a time before history is recorded, providing a fascinating first-hand account of the journey of an ancient people, known only through tribal lore. Beyond Sarah’s story, Sheldon takes the reader on a captivating trip into a small coastal city on the Olympic Peninsula, and its surrounding park lands. The novel is filled with well-developed characters, and thoughtful descriptions of a magical place filled with history and legend.
Beyond the camping trip and Sarah’s story, Sheldon also manages to interweave additional plots including corrupt politicians and an international corporation seeking to disrupt the environment as well as the water access of a local Native American tribe. This all while detailing the delicate familial relationship between a young girl and her grandfather.
Well-written and intriguing, this novel was an easy read, grabbing my attention from the first pages through the final chapter. There is some slightly graphic violence, but absolutely no profanity or erotic scenes. Additionally, the novel is clearly well edited as I noticed no errors, misspellings or typos. I liked most the author’s ability to fully describe a scene or action during the story. However, there is nothing specific I can note that I disliked most about the novel.
I believe this novel would appeal to any reader, especially those with an interest in books about ancient history, legends and the unknown origin of mankind. That said, readers with little interest in these topics, in addition to archeology, geology and the movement of man through history may not find the book as enjoyable. Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I truly enjoyed it from start to finish and managed to learn something about a topic which I had very little knowledge.
