13-year-old Sarah is brought to live with her grandfather, Tom, at the edge of the Olympic State Park in Washington. Her arrival almost interrupts a planned hiking trip into the mountains until her grandfather’s friend, Walleye, suggests she go along. Grandfather, Walleye, Myra, and Sarah trek into the mountains where Tom has unfinished business. She storms off in the middle of an argument and is missing for eight days. At the same time, a group of surveyors are looking for an erbium mine for the Buckhorn Corporation. Myra pressures them into helping look for the missing child. Sarah returns after the search helicopter has given up, and only Grandfather and Walleye are still looking. She is worn, weary, and injured with a fantastic story that ultimately places them in danger from the surveyors.

Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a 4 out of 4 stars novel told with a touch of mysticism and a dash of truth. It is well written, professionally edited, and contains only limited profanity or violence. The author has captured the nature of a headstrong teenager with Sarah’s character. She is convinced Tom is a mean old man, and the hike is torturous child abuse. Though she complains incessantly during the hike in, she insists on walking out on her own two feet, flaunting the stubborn streak that served her well during her adventure. Tom thinks she is headstrong and imaginative. The story she tells is hard to believe, and she may be more than he can handle.

Sheldon has done extensive research into the history and information of the area. His description of the landscape and people are vivid, making it easy to envision the surroundings and action. He explains how corporations manage to encroach on protected lands, how they justify doing so, and why the native people have little chance of stopping them. His book is a commentary on climate change, native history, protecting the environment, and the greed of powerful corporations. It is clear from his writing just how valuable ancient artifacts are in learning about our beginnings.

This is an enjoyable read suitable for young adults and adults who enjoy adventure, history, and mysterious treasure hunts. I have only two complaints. 1) Sometimes the scientific facts are overwhelming on the first read-through. 2) I want to know what comes next. The ending left many possibilities for a sequel, and the characters are interesting enough to keep the events moving.
