Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon begins on a dark and stormy night while Tom gets ready with his friends William and Myra to go hiking in the Olympic National Park, an urgent knocking sound at the door. He opens it to discover he has a grandchild, Sarah, and she has your typical teenager’s attitude. With no other choice, they decide to bring Sarah along to Bear Valley. This gives Tom a chance to get to know the granddaughter he never even knew he had. In addition, Sarah will learn of survival out in the vast woods and more deeply, her rich heritage.

Discover the beautiful meaning behind the title and why it’s so heartbreakingly pleasing. Learn a little bit of the fascinating stories the first nations peoples of this area tell about how they came to be. What I liked most is how Charlie Sheldon writes with the perfect amount of words, he seems to use no fillers. Also, the way he writes really reminded me of when I was a child and my grandpa would sit down to tell a story, we would sit around and hang on to his every word. The dedication of this book is endearing, and I found myself liking it even more once I finished. It even has delightful maps to help you visualize the journey.

I found myself reading quite fast and had to several times tell myself to calm down, to read slower because even though I want to know what happens, I don’t want this adventure to end just yet. There was nothing I disliked about the whole story. So it is my absolute pleasure to give a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. While there are some errors most are just the same error repeated and it wasn’t noticeable enough to take away from the full experience.

Charlie Sheldon promises stormy seas and he sure does deliver on that promise. This is the first book of a series, with the second installment called Adrift.

Strong Heart will appeal to anyone who likes adventure stories with some magical realism and those who like stories rich in history. This would be perfectly suited to someone who hasn’t tried a time-travel novel yet but is interested, as this has just enough to make it feel real to the reader. While there is hardly any amount of profanity, there is some borderline profanity.
