Strong Heart, written by Charlie Sheldon, is a book about our relationships with people, the magical things in this world, and survival in every sense of the word. In it, Sheldon tells the story of a girl named Sarah. Sarah is barely a teenager and she has already lived in several different places. According to the seemingly impossible story she tells, she has also lived in a different time. Sarah’s mother died when she was younger. Since that time, Sarah has been passed from family member to family member because she was too much of a handful. When she comes to live with Tom, her Grandfather, the first thing he does is take her hiking into the Olympic mountains. It’s here that Sarah has an experience that will alter their lives forever.

I enjoyed reading this book tremendously. Sheldon did a great job of making me feel like I was there with the characters, experiencing what they were experiencing. The way that he described each one of the characters made me feel like I knew them personally. His story drew me in from the beginning.

My only real complaint about Strong Heart is that parts of Sarah’s story read a little choppy for my taste. However, I believe it was a style choice. I can imagine an elderly Native American woman telling the story which, I think, was the idea. It’s not something that took away from my enjoyment of the book overall.

This story has a little bit of everything. It includes corporate greed and deceit, adventure, a budding love story, family drama, and politics. Most people would enjoy reading it. With that being said, there are a few groups of people who wouldn’t like it. Anyone who dislikes stories about adventure and/or mystical experiences, would not like Strong Heart. Also, those who are very sensitive to somewhat vivid details about killing and eating animals, and about people getting injured or killed, wouldn't like it. These descriptions aren’t over the top in my opinion, but I know some people are more turned off by those things than others, so it’s worth mentioning.

I rate Strong Heart 4 out of 4. There were a few mistakes in the book, but nothing major. The story flows well, and is a really good one. The ending is left open, so I know there is a follow-up story to read. I got to know the characters in such a way, that I look forward to reading the second book and learning more about them. I’m excited to see what happens next and how their lives continue on.
