Review by amihughson -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Sarah is a troubled teen. Too troublesome for her grandmother, and so is dropped into her grandfather’s lap. Tom is an old-timer, on a mission to say one last goodbye to his own grandfather’s grave before a mining operation can disturb it and the beautiful mountain it rests on. He’s never met his granddaughter. He didn’t even know she existed and is hesitant to embark on the advanced climb with such a noob, but after urging from his friend, Tom decides that clean mountain air and a distraction-free trek could do Sarah a lot of good. Journey through the wilderness with Sarah and Tom, as they discover each other, the strong bonds of family, and the magic of the Olympic Peninsula.
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is an amazing read. The characters are well developed, and the overall atmosphere is mysterious and intriguing. The author has described the mountains and the valley the characters trek through so well, it makes me want to see the Olympic Peninsula for myself. I wanted to sit with Myra and Sergei and contribute what little I could to their argument. I wanted to sit with Sarah and watch her draw the bear while the meadow hummed quietly around us. The characters and events in this story were written in a way that brought them to absolute, glorious life for me.
By the end of the novel, I was both satisfied with the events and begging for more. I want to know what happened to Sarah and if her troubles were resolved, or only intensified, once they got off the mountain. I want to know if Tom was able to get full custody of her, and how things with the mining company turned out. I wanted the answers to all my questions so badly that, to be honest, I was angry the book left all these things unresolved. Then I reflected on the title and realized something important. This wasn’t a story about endings, but about beginnings and the journey of life itself.
Strong Heart spoke to me on a profound level, and even if I still have a lot of questions, it is enough. I found no errors at all, so the novel was exceptionally well-edited. For these reasons, and the sheer amount of joy and peace I found within its pages, I have given this book 4 out of 4 stars.
This book is suitable for all ages and all people, particularly those who enjoy a small hint of mystery and magic. Those who have a general like of history or human interest tales will especially enjoy this. It is an introspective novel, so if you prefer a fast-paced, action-packed story set in urban environs, then you probably won’t appreciate this book.
