[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Astrology for the Weak" by Thom Stanley.]
Astrology for the Weak: The World’s First and Only Multiple-Choice Horoscopes by Thom Stanley is a book that contains a year’s worth of horoscopes for all of the astrological signs. The horoscopes are weekly, and the reader has the ability to choose their favorite out of three different ones. The horoscopes are not typical though. They are sarcastic! The reader gets to go through the whole year with these very unique horoscopes guiding them throughout.
This book was written with very easy to understand language and was very easy to read. There was no profanity and there were no sexually explicit scenes.
The thing I liked most about this book was the premise that the reader got to choose one of three different horoscopes. I thought it was an interesting idea. I did think that the book was a little cumbersome with all of the signs in a single book. It might work better if each sign had its own book. I also appreciated that at the back of the book there were links to each week and each choice so that I could go directly there on my Kindle. I didn’t have to scroll through the whole book to find a specific place.
The thing I disliked most was that this book was not well edited. It was clear that there were many grammatical mistakes in the book and sometimes they were distracting. In the beginning of the book, one of the signs had the wrong dates. It took about three months for the dates to be correct for that sign. I think the worst part was the repeating horoscopes and the ones that were in the wrong month. I would read a horoscope and recognize it from a previous month and know that I had already read it. It looked like the author had copied and pasted it and then forgot to change it. In the middle of the summer there were horoscopes for Halloween. It was extremely sloppy and I was not happy to read it. In one case, I read the same horoscope three times.
I would also like to note the author’s use of sarcasm and humor in the book. I did not find the book funny. I found a lot of the references to be out of date of cliched and I did not laugh at all. The author seemed to think that portraying the reader as stupid, inept, flatulent, ugly or other unflattering characteristics would be humorous. There might be a way to pull that schtick off. The author did not.
Overall, this book was torture to read. It took a lot of inner strength not to quit in the middle of it. Those who are into horoscopes or sarcasm may like it. It just was not my cup of tea. I was really disappointed because I was looking forward to the innovative format. I am giving this book 1 out of 4 stars.
