I just finished reading Man Mission by Eytan Uliel. This is the story of four men, friends from college, who decide on taking an annual trip -- someplace they can test and challenge themselves. Places that can make others wonder why they pick such a place to escape to. These are good men, always there for each other. Which is a good thing, given the challenges they face on their journeys.

The Man Mission is based mostly on their adventures, but their lives at make themselves felt along the way. Their normal lives....their marriages, careers, parents, children....are such a part of them, they cannot be escaped, even in the far reaches of the globe.

The narrator gives us the history of their friendships....how they began, how they've developed through the years. Each of the members of this foursome bring a special skill to the group. One is the planner, one is map specialist, one is the transportation head.....leaving our narrator to be a little of all these, and also seems to be designated as the weak link of the group. He is the one whose equipment breaks, who gets injured, the reason plans have to change.

The narrator's personal life shows he seems to have the most personal complications, ups and downs, just as on their travels. The others also have their personal life challenges, and through it all, they are always there for each other....both at home and on their trips. This story is well-written, keeping this reader waiting to see what was going to happen to next. What is their next trip? Did they escape that hike intact? What's in their future? As is true when you get four men together, there were some "F bombs" dropped, but nothing that was inappropriate or offensive, especially given their situations.

I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 ....it is entertaining....but so much more. By giving us a peek into these men, their trials, the outcomes.....you can't but help looking into your own life to see what happened and where you're going. Eytan Uliel gives us views to parts of the world we'll never see. The descriptions of the foliage, the rivers, icy terrains, the people, the foods served at their meals so far away from home.....all brings the reader to those places, to feel what the men faced.

I am now a Eytan Uliel fan, and will be looking for my next read written by him.\
