Strong Heart is a captivating novel filled with expedition, thrilling adventures, magic, relationships, ancestry, culture and drama. The plot is set in the Pacific Northwest and the story is written by Charlie Sheldon. Tom is planning to take a trip through Olympic National Park with his friends. But, unexpectedly Sarah, his granddaughter arrives at tom’s place to spend the summer.

One must understand that, Tom doesn’t know anything about having a granddaughter. So, he is understandably very reluctant about taking her in and accepting her. Also, he is worried about cancelling his trip. The trip has sentimental value to him. Thus, he takes her along with him and the ensuing adventure is the story of strong heart.

I loved the amount of effort the author has put into writing this book. The author’s familiarity with the plot’s setting is clear in his writing. For instance, his description about the routes, the imagery and natural environment are very vivid. It’s presented in a detailed manner. Also, I liked the part where they shared stories in the campfire. It gave an insight about the feelings of the characters towards their culture and ancestry. The shifting of perspectives was also beautifully done. It adds a rich quality to the plot.

The story deals with complex themes such as regression, time travel, and ancestry. But, it’s grounded with logic, which prevents confusion. For instance, the concept of time was a little confusing to me. Sarah seemed to be missing for months, but in reality, it was only for the duration of 8 days. But the confusion was cleared after I understood the concept of time, in reality and time travel.

Occasionally the narrative changed a bit abruptly and I had to re-read paragraphs just to make sure that I did not skip a part. At the end, though, all the subplots came together and made impeccable sense. The only thing that I liked least in this novel is that, I wish the author had provided more information about the characters and their backstories. This would have hooked me up with the plot, in the very beginning itself.

The book seems to well edited. I would like to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed the novel. I would like to recommend this book to the fans of books such as The journey to the center of the earth, The Mazerunner, Melissa & Kasho, and The Sparrow.
