Review by nefitzgerald -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a beautiful and fantastical story of native American legends, cleverly and seamlessly interwoven into a modern-day camping trip into the ancient mountains. It’s a journey of discovery for Sarah, a young, abandoned and troubled girl, who has been tossed from pillar to post during her short years. She is thrust upon her hitherto unknown grandfather Tom, as he prepares to set off on a camping trip with two friends. Tom has his own personal mission to accomplish on the trip, but bringing Sarah along could jeopardise the whole thing. As tales from people of another time are revealed to them, the camping party face incomprehensible challenges they were unprepared for.
The book delicately handles human relationships and how they evolve over time. It deals with personal battles of mistrust, anger, ageing, stubbornness, independence and pride. It is also a book about the injustices of corporate greed and bullying against ordinary people trying to protect their ancestral legacies and ancient tribal land.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and particularly liked the way the book switched between the two entirely different ages and corresponding language styles. I found the detail about the native American tribal way of life in ancient times fascinating. It was also a joy to watch the relationship between Sarah and her grandfather develop and Sarah’s own character blossom.
This is a gentle and easy-to-read book, with simple and clear language that does not tax your brain. It is very easy to immerse yourself into the different characters of the book and feel their frustrations, anger, hate and self-doubts. However, the book also feels informative and I felt I had learned something of native American traditions by the end of it. It also left me feeling uplifted, despite the brutality of the corporate bullies. There was nothing about this book I didn’t like and I would recommend this book to anyone.
The book would make a good holiday book (or lockdown book in current times). I think it will appeal to a wide audience but will hold special appeal to any one of, or interested in, native American history and/or traditions. I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
The book is very well edited, I found no errors of any type in the book. The book contains only a few, mild profanities. There are no erotic scenes in the book. I do not think this book would offend anyone and it could be read by any adult or teenager.
