Buckhorn Industries is about to begin surveying Olympic National Park for mineral deposits. This could mean big changes for the park, the surrounding area, and the local residents. It could also mean Tom’s last chance to visit his grandfather's grave, which is located well inside of the park’s boundary.

Tom's need to return to his grandfather's grave has been pressing on him for about forty years. Lately the urge has been growing to pay his respects, spruce up the site, and return an old relic that he carried out so long ago. This relic could have far reaching ramifications.

Three others are joining Tom on this long, difficult pilgrimage. The decision to bring Sarah, Tom’s thirteen year old granddaughter, leaves him feeling uneasy. She has no camping or hiking experience, but her last minute arrival left no other option than to bring her along. It was either bring her along, or cancel the trip, with very little hope of being able to reschedule.

After being lost in the wilderness for eight days, the story Sarah tells is met with disbelief. After all, she insists she’s been gone for months, traveled thousands of miles, on the ocean, in a canoe, and unlike some of her companions, survived close encounters with large, wild, predatory animals.

The elaborate details Sarah claims to remember, and even her injuries, can be explained logically. However, the skills she can now deftly display are not so easily dismissed.

Charlie Sheldon’s novel, Strong Heart, takes place in the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The harsh and unforgiving environment makes an ideal setting for this dauntless tale of survival, perseverance, courage, and strength of will.

The strong, well developed characters and plausible sequence of events, give Strong Heart a tangible feeling of credibility. This creates the perception that the author is not just creating a work of fiction, but recording events as he actually witnessed them.

One of my favorite things about Strong Heart is Charlie Sheldon’s uncomplicated writing style. He tells his story in a straightforward, compelling way. Free of clutter and distractions.

The only thing I didn’t like about Strong Heart was the way it ended. It seemed abrupt, and left a few unanswered questions.

The editing done on this book is also worth noting. It was very well done, and complimented a positive reading experience.

Based on a foundation of history and nature, Strong Heart is a powerfully executed story of adventure and drama. It is a very well written by a talented and capable author. This novel will appeal to a wide variety of tastes, and is suitable for readers of all ages.

Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is an entertaining and enjoyable novel, and I rate it an enthusiastic four out of four stars.
