Official Review: Matteo and Fizzle by Matthew Myers
Matteo and Fizzle: A Time of Peace, by Matthew Myers, is about two ferrets who escape Petsmart and take a journey together. On their journey, they first meet Houdini the cat and his assistant Indigo, a dog. Houdini is like a shaman that animals from all over come to see and seek his wisdom. Matteo wants to know what the meaning of life is. While Fizzle and Matteo are staying with Houdini and Indigo, they learn about a goat named Ziggy who can heal animals. Matteo has a lump on his stomach which he believes is cancer. On their way to meet Ziggy, Matteo and Fizzle meet various characters and some animal organizations. Some are helpful to them while they have to escape from others.
The aspect of this book I liked the most was the life lessons and wisdom interwoven into the story. Most of it came from Houdini. He tells them things like the creator is the soul and how everything an animal need is already inside of them. Although some of these instances of wisdom are followed by Houdini passing gas, there are still some valuable thoughts shared.
The aspect of this book I liked the least was the writing style. It was like it included a couple of writing styles making it inconsistent. Some parts were beautifully descriptive, but in other parts, when a character was telling a story, it seemed to run on and on. The character never stopped to breath and I felt like I had to rush through to keep up with the story. There were also a lot of obvious spelling mistakes and capitalization errors that I was not a fan of.
The audience for this book would be adults or older teenagers who are looking to read a silly book. It is an easy and fun read, but besides the nuggets of wisdom included, it is simply about two ferrets interacting with other animal characters. Although I would consider it a fun read, it is still for a mature audience. There are some occurrences of sexually suggestive conversation and more than a few profanities included in this book.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. There are a lot of editing errors included and it has not been professionally edited. There is definitely an audience for this book, but I personally did not enjoy it. Like I said before, I thought the wisdom shared through this book was valuable, but other than that, there was nothing very interesting about this book to me.
