Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a fast-paced novel that mainly blends drama and adventure. It is based on the studies carried out by the author in the fields of anthropology and archeology, focusing on research and legends about the first humans who populated the Olympic Peninsula.

The story begins when Sarah appears at the door of her grandfather, Tom, who is about to go camping with his friend William and Myra, William's daughter. Tom doesn’t even know he has a granddaughter. He plans to visit his grandfather’s grave, who died being with him while camping in the Olympic National Park several years ago. Tom's grandfather gave him a dart thrower, an atlatl. Tom hoped to improve his grandfather's grave and bury the atlatl in the grave as a tribute. The atlatl seems to be a very old artifact, probably made by the first settlers of this region thousands of years ago.

An enterprise called Buckhorn plans to establish an erbium mining company in the middle of the park. Fletcher Lynch, Sarah's step-grandfather, owns a mining claim in the park, which previously belonged to Tom's family. Fletcher wants to sell this mining claim to Buckhorn so that it can establish its mining and, as payment, it builds the conference center that Lynch has dreamed of.

Tom, William, and Myra decide to make the climbing trip to the park as planned, taking Sarah with them. While on the mountain trip, Sarah gets mad and walks away from the group, takes the atlatl and hides it somewhere. Later, she ends up disappearing for eight days, when she finally returns, Sarah tells that she lived an incredible story with ancient native people. The others seem not to believe her.

After several months, they come back to the park to recover the atlatl that Sarah had hidden. During this second trip, unexpected events take place and when they try to get out, various fires occur across the main trail, so they must take an alternative route being led by Sarah.
The story revolves around Saran, the main character, who is the protagonist of the facts that are currently happening, but also lives weird experiences with native people or perhaps they are just dreams. In these adventures with the ancient natives, they give Sarah the name Strong Heart.

On the whole, all the characters are developed as the novel progresses, although their backgrounds are not given completely. One can imagine the characters in their physical features and personalities. The actions and landscapes descriptions are detailed and vivid, allowing the readers to picture how the park is like and feel as though they are immersed in each environment mentioned.

The writing style keeps readers attentive. The dialogues are well constructed, believable, and fluid. There is one main plot, which swivels around the trips in the park. The subplot focuses on Sarah's strange experiences with the ancient natives.

Many aspects keep you thoughtful in this beautiful novel. Are these Sarah experiences with natives true or were they just a dream? Will they be able to retrieve the atlatl and use it to show that there might be more antique artifacts in the park and thus try to stop Fletcher's intentions? Will Buckhorn manage to install the erbium mining company in the park?

I enjoyed Strong Heart, it is a fascinating, entertaining, adventure-filled reading that provides interesting scientific insight into the fields of anthropology and archeology. It also mentions intriguing legends and beliefs concerning the ancient natives.

I found this book amused, captivating and pedagogical. The edition is outstanding. I only found a few typos that don't affect reading at all. I am pleased to give Strong Heart 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to those who like adventure stories and who are interested in the topic of ancient natives and the arguments about the first inhabitants of the Olympic Peninsula.
