Bible Doodles by Chaplain Bill Martin is a short book of cartoons showing various scenes from the book of Genesis. The author/illustrator created each doodle while rereading Genesis and turned them into illustrations in order to compile them into this book. Each picture is accompanied by a short quotation from the verse that inspired it, along with a citation to help the reader find the verse in the Bible.

My favorite part about these illustrations is the depiction of God as a jolly, round man. Rather than showing the wrathful, intimidating God that many readers see in the Old Testament, this author has re-characterized God as a fun, loving companion with a great sense of humor. For example, when God is depicted in the Garden of Eden, he wears typical farmer’s clothes, including a straw hat. Later, he is shown relaxing in a beach chair alongside Abraham.

The biggest thing that I would want to see changed in this book is for it to be expanded into an actual story. As it stands, the illustrations are disjointed. They are only tied together by the author’s placement of them in the order that the scenes occur in the Bible, and the author only illustrated, on average, one scene for each chapter in Genesis. I think this could become a fun children’s Bible if the author focused on specific stories in Genesis and created more drawings for each story. It could appeal to older kids or teens if the author expanded the verse references into summaries of each chapter to accompany each illustration.

Overall, I would rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed looking through the illustrations and remembering each story, many of which I hadn’t read in a while. The illustrations and writing appear to be professional, as I didn’t find any mistakes in the book. However, it only took me about twenty minutes to go through the whole book, and it felt more like a collection of pictures than a cohesive book. Because of this issue, I couldn't award this book more than two stars.

I would recommend this book to people who have read Genesis and would like a fun, quick summary of each chapter. The illustrations are truly original, and I had a good time looking at each of them and remembering the accompanying stories. However, I wouldn’t recommend this book to those who want a summary of the stories of Genesis, as it only includes reference verses for each illustration, not a full story.

God depicted as a fun loving God? This is ridiculous. The author should have known that we can't change the person of God. He is God and nothing less. All the same thanks for the review.
